Is lipedema liposuction covered by OHIP or private insurance in Canada?

Because lipedema isn’t recognized by Canada yet, lipedema liposuction is not covered by insurance. We can discuss costs during your consultation and are continually advocating to push for recognition.  

How is lipedema liposuction different from cosmetic liposuction? 

Cosmetic liposuction is done to reshape the body, while lipedema liposuction treats a medical condition. The goal is to remove diseased fat and reduce pain while protecting the lymphatic system. The technique is gentler and more targeted to how lipedema tissue behaves compared with ordinary fat.

How many surgical sessions does lipedema liposuction require?

This depends on the stage of lipedema, how many areas are affected, and safety limits on how much can be removed at once. In Canada, outpatient liposuction is generally capped at 5 litres of aspirate per session to protect patient safety and avoid complications from significant fluid shifts. 

Milder cases with a smaller treatment area may fall comfortably within this limit and be addressed in a single session, while more advanced or widespread lipedema often exceeds it and requires several sessions spaced apart. Treating the body in stages allows each area to be handled safely within the 5-litre guideline and gives the tissue time to heal between procedures.

Can lipedema liposuction cure lipedema?

Liposuction does not cure lipedema, since there is currently no cure for the condition. What it can do is remove painful fat deposits and improve mobility, and it can slow the progression of the disease. Many patients experience less pain and better quality of life, though ongoing management remains part of long-term care.

How is lipedema diagnosed?

Lipedema has no single diagnostic test. Instead, it's a diagnosis of exclusion based on clinical history and a physical examination by a provider who knows the condition well. During the exam, a doctor looks for symmetrical fat distribution, tenderness, easy bruising, and feet that remain unaffected.
