Botox Injections in Kingston, Ontario

Botox Cosmetic, also known as onabotulinumtoxinA, is a specific formulation of botulinum toxin type A that is used for cosmetic purposes. It is the most well-known and widely used brand of botulinum toxin for cosmetic treatments. Botox Cosmetic is FDA and Health Canada approved for temporary improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines), crow's feet lines around the eyes, and forehead lines in adults.

How Botox Cosmetic Works:

Botox Cosmetic works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals to the muscles in the treated area, resulting in muscle relaxation. The active ingredient, botulinum toxin type A, inhibits the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter responsible for muscle contractions. By reducing muscle activity, Botox Cosmetic helps soften the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, which are caused by repeated muscle movements and facial expressions. It's important to understand that Botox Cosmetic will not completely eliminate wrinkles that are present at rest.

Treatment Process:

Botox Cosmetic treatments are best performed in a medical setting for cleanliness, safety and sterility. The procedure is quick, with minimal discomfort and downtime. Here is an overview of the treatment process:

1. Consultation: The first step is to consult with a trained and experienced Plastic Surgeon, or Nurse Injector working in conjunction with a Plastic Surgeon, who will assess your concerns, discuss your desired outcomes, and determine if you are a suitable candidate for Botox Cosmetic treatment.

2. Preparation: After your consultation, photos will be taken and you will be asked to review the post care instructions and sign the consent form. The areas to be injected are then cleansed with antiseptic.

3. Injection: Using a fine needle, the Plastic Surgeon or Nurse Injector will carefully administer Botox Cosmetic into specific muscles in the treatment area. The number of injections and the amount of Botox used will depend on your unique facial anatomy and desired results.

4. Post-treatment: After the injections, you can resume your normal activities, but avoid vigorous exercise, rubbing the treated area, or lying down for four hours to minimize the risk of spreading the toxin to unintended areas.

Results and Duration:

The effects of Botox Cosmetic usually become visible within a few days to a week after treatment. However, the full results may take up to two weeks to manifest. The treated muscles gradually relax, resulting in a smoother, more refreshed appearance. The effects of Botox Cosmetic are temporary, typically lasting around 3 to 4 months. Over time, as the muscle activity returns, the treated wrinkles may gradually reappear, and maintenance treatments are necessary to sustain the desired results.

Safety and Side Effects:

Botox Cosmetic is generally considered safe when administered in a healthcare setting by a professional. However, like any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects, although they are usually minimal and temporary. Common side effects may include temporary redness, swelling, bruising, or mild discomfort at the injection sites. Rarely, some individuals may experience headache, flu-like symptoms, or eyelid drooping. Dr Meathrel, or our nurse injectors: Shelby and Christina will review the pros and cons of the treatment during your consultation.

Conclusion:

Botox Cosmetic is a popular and effective treatment option for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles caused by muscle movement. By temporarily relaxing the muscles, it provides a smoother and more youthful appearance. Dr Meathrel has been injecting Botox Cosmetic since it was approved by Health Canada in 2001 during her Plastic Surgery Residency and has been offering Botox Injections in Kingston Ontario since 2006.
