CoolSculpting is a non-surgical fat reduction procedure that involves freezing fat cells in targeted areas of the body. While it is generally considered safe and effective, there are some potential complications that can occur. And it is because of these complications and the frequency of complications that Dr Kim decided to no longer offer Coolsculpting in favour of equipment with a higher safety profile: Vanquish, Exilis and BodyTite. Complications of Coolsculpting include:
Numbness or tingling: During the procedure, the targeted area is numbed with a cooling sensation. However, some people may experience prolonged numbness or tingling in the treated area, which can last several weeks or months.
Pain or discomfort: While most people report only mild discomfort during the procedure, some individuals may experience more significant pain or discomfort. This can be caused by the freezing of nerves or other tissue damage. In Dr Kim's past practice patients were routinely given nerve pain drugs to deal with this issue post CoolSculpting and this is a key reason by Dr Kim decided to no longer offer Coolsculpting
Swelling or bruising: Swelling and bruising are common side effects of CoolSculpting. And although CoolSculpting is often marketed as having no downtime, this swelling, bruising and tenderness can impact daily activities.
Skin sensitivity: Some people may experience increased skin sensitivity in the treated area, which can last for several weeks to months.
Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia: CoolSculpting can actually cause an increase in the volume of fat cells in the treated area, rather than a reduction. This is known as paradoxical adipose hyperplasia and may require surgical correction. Unfortunately, liposuction to correct paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is difficult and often less than successful as the fat that grows is thick, tough and often scar like making it difficult to remove. 90s supermodel Linda Evangelista has filed a lawsuit against CoolSculpting for leaving her disfigured post treatment: https://people.com/health/linda-evangelista-says-she-has-paradoxical-adipose-hyperplasia-from-coolsculpting-what-to-know/
Because of these complications we offer Vanquish and Exilis noninvasive radiofrequency body contouring, BodyTite Radiofrequency Assisted Liposuction, and Liposuction.
